The International Family AIDS Program (IFAP)

Thanks to high-quality programs and scientific advances, AIDS in children is disappearing in New York and the United States.

We now have a moral obligation to act globally.

The International Family AIDS Program (IFAP) was founded by Dr. Stephen Nicholas* in 1999, applying lessons learned over the past 20 years in fighting pediatric AIDS in northern Manhattan.

A collaborative effort of university, church, foundation, and private philanthropic partners, IFAP currently:

• Provides direct care and treatment for over 1000 HIV-infected children, mothers and fathers in a Center of Excellence in the Dominican Republic, a model of AIDS care for the Caribbean;
• Conducts AIDS research to improve the understanding of the distribution, treatment and prevention of HIV infection;
• Sends Columbia University medical and public health students and pediatric residents for training and education in the Dominican Republic;
• Provides technical support and assistance to the Ministry of Health of the Dominican Republic; the MIR Foundation, Dominican Republic; Hospital Albert Schweitzer, Deschapelle, Haiti; the William J. Clinton Foundation's HIV/AIDS Initiative; the World Health Organization; UNICEF; the Centers for Disease Control; USAID; Family Health International; the Russian Health Ministry in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Sparrow's Nest in Johannesburg, South Africa.

* Dr. Stephen Nicholas is the Director of Pediatrics at Harlem Hospital Center. He started the Harlem Pediatric AIDS Program in 1985; was a co-founder of Incarnation Children's Center is 1988, of which he was medical director and then executive director 1988-2000. He is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Columbia University and an internationally-recognized expert in the care of HIV-infected children and their families
